Cardiovascular diseases was major cause of death in Bulgaria with 69930 registered deaths (in year 2016) i.e. 64% of total deaths. Overall Cardiovascular diseases, Cancers and Dementia were highest types of death causes in Bulgaria.

Major Risk Factors of Death



  • Three Major factors of death in Bulgaria are High blood pressure, High cholesterol and High body-mass index (obesity). Every year around 10 people die due to High blood pressure.
  • Low birth weight and Child wasting are the major risk factor of kids death aging under 5 years.
  • Secondhand smoke and Outdoor air pollution are the major risk factors of death of people aging between 5 to 14 years.
  • Smoking, High blood pressure and High total cholesterol are the death risk factors of people aging between 15 to 49 years.
  • High blood pressure, Smoking and High body-mass index (obesity) are the major death risk factors of people aging between 50 to 69 years.
  • High blood pressure is the major death risk factors for people aging more than 70 years.

0.84% of Bulgaria population was suffering from cancer i.e. 95082 people (average of years 2011-2016). Highest number of cancer patients deaths were recorded due to Colon & rectum cancer (Count : 2790) and Stomach cancer was also concerning with 1359 deaths in a year. In last few years it has been observed that, people suffering from Esophageal cancer have 12% of survival chance.Bulgaria was really successful in diagnosing Thyroid cancer where 97% of people were cured.Highest number of cancer patients i.e. 47955 people were of age group 50-69 year olds.In 2016, 18214 were suffering from Colon & rectum cancer out of which 2790 people were dead. This means 15.32% death rate of people suffering from Colon & rectum cancer. This below data represents major cancer types in Bulgaria and number of deaths due to particular cancer types :
